Just because he has a history doesn't mean he should have lied his ass off to Dean, and went sneaking off on him after he sold his soul, died, and literally went to HELL for Sam.
He is human, and he is scare. He knows what Dean thinks about his psiquic powers, and Ruby. Dean sees the world in black and white, and Sam is too grey for him to understand.

That boy had better have a DAMN good explanation.
I don't think he needs one. If you want to turn Sam into a villain, nothing I'll say, or the series say, is going to make any difference.
