X-Men: First Class Review
Includes slash and het!
Has pictures!
Paint!Mystique
For the most part I loved this movie. It is definitely on par with X2. FINALLY after 8 years another quality X-Men movie.
-I loved how they didn't sugarcoat Erik being a Holocaust survivor and actually showed him HUNTING DOWN AND MURDERING NAZIS LIKE AN OBSESSED JOHN WINCHESTER-LIKE BADASS MOTHERFUCKER.
-Kevin Bacon!
-Baby!Mystique is adorable XD
-I liked 'Emma Silverfox's diamond effects for the "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" movie a lot better than Emma Frost's. She wasn't very diamond-y, more crystal.
-Erik taking out The Bacon's ship WITH A FUCKING ANCHOR. I loved it when Xavier realized Erik was there and the next thing they see is his awesome power at work.
And then one of the greatest bromances in all of the X-Men universe was born:

Or something like this:

I would also like to direct the slashers Here, where there is some amazing Charles/Erik art.
-The recruitment scenes
-Kevin Bacon traumatizing children
-Azazel is kind of all kinds of awesome
-Please for the love of all things: WHY did Darwin have to die? Another black guy bites it? Cool death scene, but still. Come on, already tv.
-And Erik charging into that Russian HQ like a BAMF.
-LOL, Emma and her imaginary telepathic sex faking ^,^
-Power training! BANSHEE! Erik pushing him! Erik and Charles!
Relationships: I have to shamefully admit that I am not really a Charles/Erik shipper, the blasphemy I KNOW!
I've liked Magneto/Mystique since the Original X-Men Trilogy (OXT), and on the X2 DVD Magneto/Mystique as lovers is mentioned on the writers and producers commentary. It was all sorts of awesome to have it become canon (since 90% of my ships amount to nothing).
BUT.
I wish they had built up Erik/Raven with more scenes particularly since she becomes the woman who would quite literally, do anything for him. The loyalty and closeness they have in the OXT, I wanted to see that develop.
Things basically went like this:

I'm pretty sure "Fuck you Charles, I'm stealing your boyfriend" was subtle-y implied.
To have her get over Hank in .3 seconds and climb into Erik's bed of all places was a little...weird. A bit more sexual tension between Erik and Raven would have gone a long way into making that scene work more, since all they had were small interactions while Raven is getting the emotional closeness with Hank down.
As much as I loved the kiss, it could have made clearer that that's where things were ultimately heading.
Now the ending... Oh dear.
-Azazel. He can teleport but apparently using that to save everyone was too much to ask.

...or was it? Maybe he just thought it was hi-fucking-larious to watch Magneto and Professor X fight, or maybe it turned him on? Or maybe he wanted everyone on that island to die just for the lulz? He was conscious wasn't he?

The only thing I took issue with was Erik NOT HAVING AZAZEL TELEPORT XAVIER TO A GODDAMN HOSPITAL. WTF? REALLY? REALLY? It was better to just leave him there with the militaries who just tried to KILL THEM ALL, and think what? Xavier saved them so he owes them? The military kind of already owed them for saving their asses and preventing WWIII but they still shot an enormous amount of ordinance their way.
Total Failboat on that one Erik. He could have at least sent Azazel back for the X-Men once the New Brotherhood was shacked up in one of Shaw's old hideouts... and making his grand speech while Xavier lies there in shock and increasing agony. Pretty sure he might be kind of bleeding all over the place.
Do you know what I would have preferred?
If Magneto's defection had taken place over the course of three movies. They said they wanted a new trilogy, so why not have the first movie end with Xavier not paralyzed and Erik still ambiguously good (but further descending into hate for humans)?
That way:
1) More bonding and friendship between Erik and Charles over 3 movies. That makes his creation of the Brotherhood more tragic and you can see why, even though on opposing sides, Magneto and Xavier are still close after 45+ years. They would have had an even more epic bromance this way.
2) More Erik swaying Raven to his way of thinking. Charles has been her brother for all these years, she loves him. And seeing her developing loyalty and love towards Erik would have made her choosing the Brotherhood make more sense rather than siding with the guy who just accidentally shot your brother in the spine just because he thinks you're hot
3) Would have had the First Class be a team for much longer and finding their stride, and taking on some awesome villains. (I am SO hoping for Mr. Sinister or Apocalypse in these next two sequels.)
4) Erik wouldn't have left Charles paralyzed and bleeding on a beach surrounded by people who just tried to kill them all o.0 Seriously WTF was with that ending?
And I want to end just a little off topic. This new trilogy is a reboot. They may be prequels but they are first and foremost a reboot IMO. There are already too many continuity inconsistencies with the OXT and XO:W for these to be prequels. Maybe I should be calling it OXD though? "Original X-Men Duology", since clearly X3 NEVER FUCKING HAPPENED >.<
Speaking of Wolverine though: AHAHAHAHAAHHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. So much love ♥ You all know the scene.
